Adventure idea for Dungeons & Dragons:
.
KHALKOTAUROI
.
- Initial situation :
In the region of Bazareene, there is a human mining town named Brunwall, with around ten thousand inhabitants. This city is located not far from Mount Brun, the only inexplicably active volcano in the region, which comes into activity approximately every seventy years. Aside from the natural hazards caused by this phenomenon, igneous creatures sometimes emerge from the lava crater in an irregular manner (which suggests that the volcano is directly connected to the Elemental Plane of Fire). The city is magically protected by a noble lineage of sorcerers, who notably erected a wall from which the city takes its name.
.
- Trigger event :
While the next eruption seems to begin earlier than expected, a rumor has started to circulate concerning a gigantic monster, which would have emerged a few times from Mount Brun. The rare observers speak of an over 30ft-tall minotaur made out of magma, holding a huge hammer.
This being, called the magmataur, only appears briefly when daring visitors venture near the crater. The only witnesses are those who fled, and the creature only seems to attack the rare individuals who had the audacity to confront it.
The inhabitants are therefore not directly worried, but the great threat represented by the magmataur has created a climate of paranoia among the population. The authorities, feeling the panic growing, have already called on a few adventurers to solve this matter, but none of them returned.
The sorcerers who govern the city are actively looking for other (and preferably high level) adventurers to take charge of this problem, in exchange for an impressive reward of gold and diamonds.
.
- Final revelation:
The magmataur is actually an entity named Khalkotauroi. It was conceived by the combined efforts of Nessek, the goddess of fire, and Tephaneron the god of war, as a challenge intended to recruit powerful champions.
Khalkotauroi is indeed the guardian of one of the Seven Crowns, a series of artifacts created during a war between the famous city of Manifest and the undead armies of Xaphan. These powerful wondrous items leaded Manifest to victory, but another war seems to be coming: in fact, some diviners in various regions are beginning to have visions announcing an approaching disaster.
The one or those who are able to defeat the mighty Khalkotauroi will then obtain this artifact and the favor of the gods, which intend them to play a major role during the incoming battle.
